From the Commander

The first time I watched the television series The Pacific I was deployed to Logar Province, Afghanistan, supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. The Pacific is a companion piece to the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers and focuses on the United States Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific during World War II. I watched the series on a flat screen television while sitting on a couch in an air conditioned tent, vastly different conditions than those the Marines experienced in The Pacific.

Life on our Forward Operating Base (FOB) had its risks; namely occasional mortar rounds and rockets, known as indirect fire, launched at our small base from the surrounding mountains. Outside the FOB, elusive insurgents and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) posed an even greater risk. Regardless, my experience was nothing like that of our Marines fighting to secure Iwo Jima, Peleliu, and Okinawa. Needless to say, the dichotomy was not lost on me at the time.

My point here is that every veteran’s service is different. Whether in wartime or peacetime, combat or routine operations, afloat or ashore, it is important that we welcome and value every veteran equally.
